After Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, the museum returned many of the artworks, which had been seized by the Napoleonic Army, to the original owners. The rules of Louis XVIII and Charles X, as well as the period of the Second French Empire increased the museum’s collection again, as it gained over 20,000 works of art. Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Paintings, Prints and Drawings are the main departments that are curated in the Louvre.

The acquisition of sculptures was of special importance to Jacobsen, but his collection soon grew from a sculpture garden to that of a museum located within his house. No mean feat in art acquisition, the museum was opened to the public, and featured nineteen galleries located within the house-turned-museum. Jacobsen’s private collection eventually outgrew the numerous extensions built for it, and so, in 1888, he donated his entire collection to the City of Copenhagen. Today, the museum’s assortment of works includes French and Danish 19th-century art, with one of the most significant collections of sculptures by Rodin outside of France.

Although perhaps best-known for the posters that he created for the French actress Sarah Bernhardt over a period of a six-year contract, Mucha also lead the way for the genre of art that would be called Art Nouveau. The Museum features a set of his famous Bernhardt posters, decorative panels, and Documents Décoratifs of the Art Nouveau style, as well as parts of his Parisian sketchbooks. These are included amongst other paintings and drawings which span his professional portfolio, dating from the early 1880’s to 1939, the year of his death.
