The religious problem of evil considers the experiences of evil and the existential difficulty of it as it relates to religious belief. In the midst of personal suffering, or the suffering of someone close, the person finds it dif ficult to affirm an appropriate attitude toward or belief in God. "2 As such, the religious problem of evil refers to the way instances of evil cause emotional difficulty for belief in God, as opposed to some kind of formal argument from evil. By contrast, however, the logical problem of evil centers on an alleged inconsistency between the idea of God's existence and the existence of evil itself.

But this approach has never satisfied many Christians or atheists, and for good reason. If a genuine contradiction exists in affirming both the reality of evil and God, then one of them must be false. 4 Rowe agrees, arguing, For if two statements are logically inconsistent, it is impossible for both of them to be true. If one of them is true, then the other must be false. 5 This problem has been stated differently by various philosophers. All, however, seek to show that there is logical contradiction within a given set of propositions.

Though not stated formally in these terms, it is clear that this is the problem that Hume points to in his argument from evil as presented in book io. He asks, "Is he willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is impotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? "I° And then to further clarify the issues, he states: Why is there any misery at all in the world? Not by chance, surely. From some cause then. Is it from the intention of deity? But he is perfectly benevolent.
